Abstract

This paper focuses on the interaction of verbal and paraverbal devices of critical rhetoric in contemporary German and Ukrainian electoral discourse as a variety of political discourse. Critical rhetoric is a prominent feature in the speeches of opposition politicians striving to win over their constituencies and gain power. The paper examines verbal, paraverbal and implicative criticism in German and Ukrainian electoral discourse as well as similarities and differences (ethno-specific contrasts) in the strategies and tactics of criticism in face-to-face & face-to-back communication in parliamentary, rallying, and mass media electoral discourse.
