U.; Hernandez-Villeda, R.We present a sensor system for monitoring the integrity of concrete structural elements such as beams and columns in buildings and other structures. The integrity sensors are arrays of conventional multimode telecommuni cations-grade optical fibers embedded in concrete elements. A sharp decrease in optical transmission indicates the breaking of the optical fiber, which is typically caused by a crack or destruction of the structural element. This sensor system successfully detected cracks in concrete beams under load. Due to its effectiveness and simplicity, it has many potential applications as cost-effective alternative to more precise but sophisticated and expensive systems for structural health monitoring.Документ Відкритий доступ Thermal treatment of silica optical fibers with CO2-laser radiation(НТУУ «КПІ», 2011) Khotiaintsev, S.; Castro-Martinez, A. N.We investigate theoretically and experimentally the effect of high-power CO2–laser radiation on silica optical fibers. We show that it takes several tens of milliseconds to heat the standard single–mode silica optical fiber to the fusing temperature of silica with the focused radiation of the CO2 laser of an output power of about 5 W. A point by point exposure of the optical fiber to the focused radiation of the CO2 laser under simultaneous axial tension results in a periodic necking of the optical fiber. Such an alteration of fiber parameters constitutes the Long Period Fiber Grating.
