Unlike conventional, geometry-based approaches, TO enables the generation of high-performance, non-intuitive cooling channel structures by optimizing material and fluid distributions. The review outlines commonly used objective functions, including average temperature minimization and multi-objective formulations balancing heat transfer and pressure drop through adjustable weighting factors. General benefits of TO are discussed, such as improved thermal performance, reduced pressure losses, and enhanced design flexibility. Additionally, recent research on topology-optimized cooling plates for server CPUs is summarized, demonstrating notable gains in thermal resistance, convective performance, and pressure drop reduction compared to traditional designs.
