dc.description.abstractThe paper is focused on Latin poet Sextus Propertius, who lived between 50 and 16 centuries before Christ, was the author of elegies, cited in a verse the Azov Sea with the name of Maeotis in a parangon, ut Maeotica nix (II 3,11) (as the snow of Azov Sea). Even though we have other Latin authors writing about Maeotis, Propertius is the most ancient one. The author puts forward the ideas that Azov Sea entered the Roman imagination, and thus the Western culture, even before Christ.
