Hazard identification is a prerequisite for risk management for flight safety. Risks are an integral part of aviation operations. However, their occurrence and potential consequences can be prevented by applying various mitigation strategies designed to contain potential hazards that could lead to unsafe operating conditions. This chapter describes the relationship between microbiological contamination of aviation fuels and their level of purity. Microbiological contamination of aviation fuel and the fuel system is a biological risk in aviation fuel supply. The complex influence of microbiological contamination on the fuel, the fuel system, and flight safety itself have been established. The conditions for the emergence of microorganisms in the fuel medium and system have been carefully analyzed. A microorganism is a specific type of contamination, so it is established that there are conditions that are necessary for the microorganism to develop as a biological object. And there are conditions that indirectly increase the likelihood of microbial contamination in the fuel and fuel system and contribute to its development. These two types of conditions are ordered and ranked to identify the factors that characterize each level of fuel contamination risk. The adverse effects caused by microbiological contamination of fuels and fuel systems can be described in the following categories: problems caused by the physical presence of microbial colonies in the fueling environment; problems caused by microbial metabolism; problems caused by microbial metabolites; problems related to the ability of microorganisms to corrode fuel system operating materials. This chapter presents the design of the monitoring system for risks of microbiological contamination of aviation fuels and fuel systems. It is a generalized algorithm for deciding on the frequency of monitoring of objects (aviation fuel, elements of fuel systems, and refueling complexes) and the selection of prevention methods on the basis of qualitative risk assessment. The algorithm consists of the determination of the monitoring object, selection of monitoring methods, analysis of monitoring results and risk assessment of microbiological contamination spread in fuels and fuel systems, and selection of methods for prevention or control of microbiological phase development.
