Анотація

This paper explores the crucial role of pronunciation and enunciation in achieving clarity within connected speech, particularly focusing on the impact of phonesthemes. While often overlooked in language education, these elements are fundamental for effective context-dependent communication in English. Drawing inspiration from observations regarding the significance of phonesthemes in spoken discourse, this study addresses the ambiguity surrounding “clarity” and the interplay between natural speech flow and precise articulation. It proposes a hierarchical classification of phonesthemic phenomena, encompassing linking, insertion/epenthesis, reduction/deletion/elision, replacement/assimilation, with respective subtypes. Practical pedagogical insights for teaching pronunciation are also suggested. The paper argues that developing awareness of these nuances, including the intentional manipulation of sounds for phonesthemic effect, is essential for both understanding and producing natural, comprehensible spoken English.
