dc.description.abstractenOdesa National I. I. Mechnikov University is one of the oldest higher education institutions in Ukraine and a classical type of university. The Nobel Prize winner Ilya Mechnikov worked there. Since its foundation, it has played an important role in local and international scientific life. Thus, there have been a number of people who were awarded the title of ‘honoris causa’. The authors of the article aim at reconstructing the whole group of such persons throughout the history of the university using archival and library funds. The tradition of awarding honourable titles is rooted in the times when the university was called Imperial Novorossiya University (1865–1920). During that period, 91 people received honourable statuses. In particular, scientists were awarded with the title of an honourable doctor (15), while the other remarkable people got the title of an honourable member (77). However, some exceptions were made for both groups. Ivan Sechenov, a famous physiologist, was awarded even twice: at first as an honourable doctor (1870) and then as an honourable member (1876). In that period three Nobel Prize winners also became honourable members of the university (Theodor Mommsen, Ivan Pavlov, William Ramsay). Previously, it was believed that honourable statuses were not awarded in the Soviet period. However, the authors managed to find the diplomas of honourable doctors given in 1975–1980 to two rectors of Szeged University (Hungary). In the 1990’s, the tradition of awarding honourable persons continued. Apart from honourable doctors (21) and professors (14), there were added the titles of «an honourable member of the Scientific Council» (4) and «a foreign member of the Scientific Council» (1). All in all, the honourable title has been awarded to 131 people among whom there prevailed academic scientists and university professors. A third of them were foreigners.uk

Мечникова. Виявлено, що статус honoris causa в 1865–2020 рр. отримала 131 особа. Незважаючи на дискретність в існуванні та перебування в межах кількох держав, університет створив і підтримує традицію існування цього статусу, що змінювався у назвах, мав різну міру та динаміку застосування залежно від епохи.uk
