dc.description.abstractenThe article studies the development of the women’s movement in Russia-governed Ukraine during 1905–1914. During this period, all the necessary preconditions for the intensification of such women’s socio-political activities had already been formed. Among such premises, there was the development of the revolutionary movement and democratization of public life and the proclamation of the Manifesto in 1905 that approved civil rights and permission to establish various societies. There was an increase in the level of public consciousness of women, therefore women’s involvement in labor relations became broader as well. In these conditions, the discussions regarding women’s problems and the provision of suffrage and labor rights, social protection, health care, motherhood, equal employment opportunities and wages, etc. were brought up. The authors have analyzed various forms of socio-political and economic activity of women and proved that during this period there was an increase in the role of women’s organizations in various spheres of public life. Charitable societies were one of the types of women’s organizations. They assisted women in employment, demanded improvement in working conditions and wages, and proclaimed the values of health and maternity. At the same time, these organizations did not lead to the transformation in the sphere of women’s labor. Another type of women’s self-organization was cooperatives. The participation of women in consumer and credit cooperatives was not widespread, but there were purely women’s production cooperatives (artels) in the field of agriculture and handicrafts. During the First Russian revolution, the women’s movement was politicized and differentiated by political views. Founded in 1905, the Union for Women’s Equality demanded equal rights for women and men, and the introduction of universal, equal, direct secret suffrage of the Constituent Assembly. The national demands were put forward as well. At the same time, a mass trade union movement had started, and women joined trade unions equally with men. Trade unions, where women dominated, were formed in the industries with a high percentage of female workers. Later, the tsarist government suppressed the revolutionary movement, therefore, the political struggle was curtailed. The focus of the women’s movement shifted towards professional, educational, and charitable activities.uk
