dc.description.abstractenOn the 20th of September 1950, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Council of Ministers of USSR adopted the resolution titled «On the Building of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station, the Southern-Ukrainian and Northern-Crimea Channels and the Irrigation of the Southern Regions of Ukraine and the Northern Regions of Crimea». This project had gained the status of the «Great construction projects of Communism» and its main goal was to supply the prerequisites for the agricultural development of the Southern regions of the Ukrainian SSR and the Northern regions of the Crimean peninsula as a single economic complex. Just after the resolution had been accepted, the question of how to distribute functions in terms of the designing of channels and the irrigation systems between Ukrainian and the Union project organizations has appeared. The designing of the path of the Southern-Ukrainian and Northern-Crimea channels was done by the «Ukrhiprovodbavovna» institute of the Ministry of Cotton of USSR. The main goal of the construction of the irrigation system in the Southern regions of Ukrainian SSR and the Northern regions of the Crimea to develop the cotton industry in these regions. Therefore, the Ministry of the Cotton of USSR was responsible for the managment, and the project organizations sent their reports to it. The «Ukrhiprovodbavovna» institute designed three variants of the Southern-Ukrainian channel path. Moreover, 50 organizations from Ukraine were involved in the projecting of the channel and the building of the irrigation system in the Ukrainian SSR. Some were also designed the residential and social objects in the channel path area. In fact, the Ukrainian project organizations, the scientific and educational institutions were supplying the «great construction projects of Communism» with the projects. The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Council of Ministers of USSR identified a potential for the mobilization of the intellectual and engineering resources for the large-scale projects not only in Ukrainian SSR, but also in the Crimea, which belonged to the Soviet Union at the time of designing and the channel building. For the first time the involvement of Ukrainian project organizations in the integration of the Crimea with Ukraine at the beginning of 1950s was analyzed on the basis of the archival data made by the author. In the process of the projecting and construction of the Southern-Ukrainian and Northern-Crimea channels, Ukrainian scientific and project organizations made many achievements, which resulted in a unification of the Southern regions of Ukrainian SSR and the Northern regions of the Crimea.uk
