dc.description.abstractotherThe paper highlights prosodic realisation of emotional function of urban landscape descriptions in English prose. The authors believe that a certain combination of prosodic means in the descriptions under study is able to influence listener’s emotions and feelings, which correlate with emotional-and-pragmatic potential of descriptive fragments on the perceptual and acoustic levels. The paper concludes that most of urban landscape passages are realised with the high level of emotionaland-pragmatic potential regardless of their dynamic degree. Among the prosodic features, which enhance emotional function of urban landscape descriptions are variations of tempo and loudness, complex rhythm, wide/widened tonic range. The emotional and syntactic centres in English prose pictures of urban life are realised with high/mid rising and falling tones, sliding or broken scales.
