An analytical method for calculating the bending of a rectangular plate resting on an inhomogeneous elastic foundation and subjected to a continuously distributed variable transverse load is proposed. It is assumed that two parallel sides of the plate are hinged, while the other two are fixed in any manner. The foundation reaction is described by the Winkler model with a variable bedding coefficient.

An exact solution of the differential oscillation equation of an Euler–Bernoulli beam resting on an inhomogeneous continuous elastic Winkler foundation is given. Based on the exact solution, an analytical method for the calculation of free oscillations of a beam is developed.
