Consonants of the Lithuanian Language in IPA Context: Identification Problems
2019) Urbanavičienė, Jolita
The report deals with the consonant system of the Lithuanian standard language in the context of IPA. It discusses controversial cases of consonant classification (fricatives /v vʲ/ or sonants /ʋ ʋʲ/; consonants /kʲ gʲ xʲ ɣʲ/ – palatal or palatalised and others). Especially great attention is devoted to palatalisation or voicing of consonants – these differential features of the phonemes are analysed on the basis of acoustic phonetics studies.

On the basis of the auditory analysis of lexico-grammatical and intonation means’ interaction, the author outlines the role of the expression “don’t want to” in rendering the refusal utterance meaning. The paper analyzes a set of intonation means participating in the expression of refusal utterances having different levels of emotional-and-pragmatic potential uttered by the speakers in different communicative situations.

The paper describes acoustic features of stressed vowel phonemes in prepared German speaking. Frequencies of both formants FI and FII of long and short stressed vowels are under consideration. The results of spectral analysis prove the tendency to centralization of all vowels. The formant areas of vowels [i:], [e:], [o:], [u:] can intersect, what can cause the vowels alternations [įe] = [ȩ:i], [ųo] = [ϙu].

A Brief Analysis of the Lithuanian and Latvian Nasal Sonorants and their Velar Allophones
2019) Jaroslavienė, Jurgita
In this paper the main spectral characteristics of the following Lithuanian and Latvian sonorants and their velar allophones are briefly described: Lith. /m/, /mj/, /n/, /nj/, [ŋ], [ŋj] and Lat. /m/, /n/, /ɲ/, [ŋ]. Until now, there has been only one comparative study on acoustic features of Lithuanian and Latvian nasals using a similar methodology [11]. For the Lithuanian part of the study, isolated sequences (of CVC type), as well as disyllabic, mostly nonsense words (of CVCV type; in the case of [ŋ], [ŋj], VCCV type) were selected, while for the Latvian language isolated monosyllabic sequences (of CVC type; in the case of [ŋ], CCVCC type) were analysed. Only the first non-stressed consonant is the object of this paper.

The article is a complex study of сonsonantal phonemes’ syntagmatics, registered at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the word throughout the historical development of the English language. The paper also proves the necessity to define the role of reasons for changes in the English consonantal syntagmatics. In particular, the study of the interaction of lingual (structural, functional, anthropophonic) and extralingual (regional, military, migratory, political, religious, ethnic, socio-legal, cultural, economic, etc.) factors made it possible to identify the reasons that caused changes in the English language in general and its phonemic system in particular.

The report is devoted to the problem of phonemic differentiation within the correlative pairs of English vowels. The experimental data obtained demonstrate their stability in the English vocalic system. Special emphasis is laid on the role of the compound qualitative-quantitative feature ‘length-tenseness’ in insuring perceptible discrimination and the phonemic status of the phonetically similar vowels within the correlative pair.

The study of English noise consonants modifications in spontaneous speech reveals the coexistence and interaction of two types of variation in the phonetic realization of phonemes: allophonic variation, being contextually predictable, and free variation, manifested through the individual one (interindividual and intraindividual). The essence of this interaction lies in subordination of the individual variation of combinatorial-positional conditionality.

Foreign Accent Nature Within the Framework of Cognitive and Discourse Paradigm
2019) Valigura, Olga
The paper focuses on the nature of a foreign accent in a bilingual’s speech within the framework of cognitive and discourse paradigm. It substantiates a theoretical background for the analysis of the interaction between cognitive interfering and linguistic interfered elements in the phonetic system of bilingual Ukrainians speaking English. The contribution outlines the principal features of foreign accent in Ukrainians’ English speech at the segmental and suprasegmental levels.

Methodology of Studying Segmental Speech Units’ Impact on the Utterance Subliminal Effect
2019) Kalyta, Alla
The paper advances methodological steps, i.e. expert and instrumental analyses, in the process of studying the role of segmental speech units’ interaction in producing the utterance subliminal effect.
