dc.description.abstractУ статті проаналізовано соціокультурний портрет чиновників-зв’язківців півдня України наприкінці ХІХ — на початку ХХ ст. Встановлено, що всупереч бажанням царської влади корпус чиновників зв’язку переважно формувався з міщан і селян. Загальний освітній рівень зв’язківців був нижчим за встановлений урядом. Доведено, що кількість жінок в установах зв’язку зростала й випереджала загальні показники по імперії. Показано, що більшість зв’язківців зараховувала себе до православних. Значна маса чиновників була найпрацездатнішого віку.
dc.description.abstractotherThis study analyzes the socio-cultural characteristics of communication offi-cials in Southern Ukraine at the turn of the 20th century. Its relevance lies in the potential to learn from the administrative experiences of the previous era, offer-ing insights for Ukraine’s contemporary public administration reforms. Notably, the research illuminates the Ukrainian component of the official cohort, a per-spective historically suppressed during the Soviet period.The research employs a methodological framework grounded in the princi-ples of historicism, systematicity, objectivity, and dialectical analysis. Methodo-logical approaches include mathematical statistics, historical-comparative, and historical-genetic methods.The corps of communication officials was established to have been mainly formed from burghers and peasants, contrary to the wishes of the tsarist authori-ties. This testified to the possibility for the representatives of these layers to climb the social ladder in the state society.The educational level of the communication officials has been analyzed. It was lower than that set by the government, though women had better education. The educational qualifications of men when entering the service, for the most part, were ignored. There were problems with the educational level of the communica-tion institutions administration, which influenced the functioning of postal and telegraph communication.The number of women in communication institutions was proven to have grown and exceeded the general indicators in the empire. More than 90% of postal and telegraph offices in the South of Ukraine were Orthodox. The Great War caused a new round of chauvinism, which increased the percentage of Or-thodox, but the overthrow of the tsar made it possible to accept Jews in the com-munication department. The physically exhausting service of communication officials and prohibition for married women to work in the communication department were proven to have had a significant impact in the age composition. Thus, 2/3 of officials were younger than 36 years old.
