Спираючись на принцип національного самови-значення, вони обґрунтовували право збереження незалежної Словаччини шляхом вільного плебісциту, зверталися до міжнародних організацій та західних політиків, підтримували ідею інтеграції Центрально-Східної Єв-ропи зі Словаччиною як рівноправним членом
dc.description.abstractotherThe offensive of the Red Army in the first months of 1945 led to the occupied territory of the Slovak state (the First Slovak Republic). Its government struc-tures were liquidated and the power of the Czechoslovak Republic was restored. For this reason, Slovak political leaders and activists were forced to go into po-litical exile in Western countries.The issue of popularizing the idea of saving national statehood was on the agenda. P. Pridavok, who was a leader of the Slovak National Council in Lon-don and had not discredited himself by cooperating with Nazi Germany, pre-pared memoranda addressed to the Western Allies. He substantiated the right to preserve Slovakia as an independent state based on the principle of national self-determination. Among the Slovak emigration in the USA, the idea of hold-ing a free plebiscite in the homeland under the control of an international com-mission was the most popular.Former Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs F. Durchansky headed the Slovak Action Committee, initiated a number of memoranda and appeals, and private letters addressed to numerous international organizations and Western polit-ical leaders. In summer 1946, he secretly visited the Paris Peace Conference. F. Durchansky emphasized that the Slovak Republic continued to exist from a legal point of view and stated that restoring the Czechoslovak Republic was an illegal act.K. Sidor, the ambassador of the Slovak state in the Vatican, concentrated his efforts on practical assistance to refugee compatriots and journalistic activities. He considered radical political activities inexpedient, because they could not change the unfavorable geopolitical situation for Slovak statehood at that time.All groups of Slovak political emigrants positively evaluated and supported the idea of creating a supranational integration association in Central and Eastern Europe, where Slovakia would be an equal member. However, the USSR, which became the dominant power in the region, did not support such plans.
