    A Brief Analysis of the Lithuanian and Latvian Nasal Sonorants and their Velar Allophones

    In this paper the main spectral characteristics of the following Lithuanian and Latvian sonorants and their velar allophones are briefly described: Lith. /m/, /mj/, /n/, /nj/, [ŋ], [ŋj] and Lat. /m/, /n/, /ɲ/, [ŋ]. Until now, there has been only one comparative study on acoustic features of Lithuanian and Latvian nasals using a similar methodology [11]. For the Lithuanian part of the study, isolated sequences (of CVC type), as well as disyllabic, mostly nonsense words (of CVCV type; in the case of [ŋ], [ŋj], VCCV type) were selected, while for the Latvian language isolated monosyllabic sequences (of CVC type; in the case of [ŋ], CCVCC type) were analysed. Only the first non-stressed consonant is the object of this paper.

    Characteristics of a Speech-and-Music Work as a Multimodal Phenomenon

    The paper presents a view on a speech-and-music work as a multimodal text created by the synthesis of speech and music. The meaning and pragmatic potential of speech-and-music works are developed by the interaction of the mentioned heterogeneous semiotic systems which in their turn are united and processed by a recipient into a certain coherent entity. The multimodality of speech-and-music works makes them valuable for teaching languages since the use of several semiotic modes contribute to better perception, meaning-making and therefore decoding and memorization of a language.

    Cognitive ground of the auditory modality

    The abstract views the cognitive ground of natives and adoptees’ auditory speech perception. Here, the auditory modality is a mental gear based on auditory receptors, memory and attention perceiving and processing auditory stimuli due to their acoustic characteristics and phonological representation. The abstract shows the specificity of natives and adoptees’ auditory modality, in particular the selective auditory attention and mismatch negativity providing auditory stimuli discriminability.

    A Confrontation between the Ukrainian Word Dim and the Latin Domus

    Consonants of the Lithuanian Language in IPA Context: Identification Problems

    The report deals with the consonant system of the Lithuanian standard language in the context of IPA. It discusses controversial cases of consonant classification (fricatives /v vʲ/ or sonants /ʋ ʋʲ/; consonants /kʲ gʲ xʲ ɣʲ/ – palatal or palatalised and others). Especially great attention is devoted to palatalisation or voicing of consonants – these differential features of the phonemes are analysed on the basis of acoustic phonetics studies.

    The Correlation of Intonation and Pragmatics in English Conversational Speech

    The article deals with the problem of correlation of intonation and pragmatics in English conversational speech. It highlights that prosody correlates with pragmatics through the attitudinal function of intonation. The author states that attitudinal intonation together with nonlinguistic information reflect the speaker’s behavior in a given situation, either as intended by the speaker or as inferred by the receiver or both.

    Evaluation of the Spoken English Parable’s Energetic Potential

    The paper is the experimental study of the energetic potential of English parables’ oral actualization. It outlines specific features of prosodic means’ interaction in English parables that contribute to conveying the text pragmatic orientation. The results of the study demonstrate the correlation between the changes of the speaker’s psycho-emotional state while producing the parable and its energetic potential resulting in its definite prosodic organization.

    The Evocative Power of Phonetics in Mixed Ability English Class

    The present paper sets out to explore the role of evocativeness in teaching remedial pronunciation to Ukrainian PhD students in mixed ability classes. We focus on tricky pronunciation cases of academic vocabulary. Special attention is paid to word stress, palatalization, devoicing, and basic intonation patterns, including, but not limited to questions and negation phonic contouring. Relevant useful online resources are also discussed.

    The paper focuses on the nature of a foreign accent in a bilingual’s speech within the framework of cognitive and discourse paradigm. It substantiates a theoretical background for the analysis of the interaction between cognitive interfering and linguistic interfered elements in the phonetic system of bilingual Ukrainians speaking English. The contribution outlines the principal features of foreign accent in Ukrainians’ English speech at the segmental and suprasegmental levels.
