| uk |
dc.description.abstractother | In 2020, during protection research in the trading quarter on Mykolaivska Hill, a pit containing a human skull was discovered. Human remains inside dwellings or outbuildings are sporadically found during archaeological excavations on the territory of the medieval settlement in Poltava, identified with the annalistic town of Ltava. The interpretation and identification of such complexes pose several problems. Solely relying on archaeological methods makes it challenging to provide an immediate and unequivocal answer regarding whether the researcher is dealing with sacrifices, evidence of a military conflict, etc. Therefore, the involvement of various interdisciplinary studies is crucial for historical reconstructions, with anthropological definitions playing a leading role in the case of osteological findings. The objective of this paper is to characterize the information potential of the discovered pit. The object identified in the northern part of the excavation belongs to typical outbuildings of the Siverians. The pit’s dark grey content is characterized by the presence of two loamy lenses (at the top and bottom of the filling), likely traces of the object’s wall destruction. The filling also includes layers of ash and coal, fragments of oven stones, and ceramics. A human skull and individual animal bones were found under the lower lens. The ceramic complex indicates pottery typical for the second half of the 12th to the early 13th century. In the middle and lower parts of the pit filling, handmade pottery of the Romny culture and wheel-made sherds from the late 10th to the early 11th century were found. The human skull is a particularly interesting item among the materials from the pit. Based on its features (postcranial skeleton not presented), it belongs to a 25–30-year-old woman with a craniological type (mesocranial with a moderately wide face) close to Kyiv Polians. The damaged wedge-shaped bone, lower part of the occipital bone, and the left temple with an ear opening suggest that the woman was beheaded but not at the first attempt. Other traces of weapon usage were preserved — the temporal bone was cut with a sharp object. Considering the condition of the skull and the presence of weapon traces, it can be inferred that the woman was a victim of events related to the inclusion of Siverian Ltava into Rus. Researchers today believe that the Romny culture suffered at least two blows from Rus after the 970’s and in the early 11th century. The challenging period of the settlement’s existence in Poltava at the final stage of the Romny archaeological culture is evidenced by several markers, including female burials in dwellings and cultural layers, as well as a hidden treasure of silver women’s jewellery on the settlement’s territory, dating to the end of the 10th to the early 11th century. Thus, the studied object contains informative sources for the study of historical processes in the South-East of the Dnipro Left Bank at the time of the incorporation of the Siverians into Rus. The findings in it are promising for interdisciplinary research, particularly in the field of historical anthropology. | uk |
