dc.description.abstractFetal growth restriction (FGR) is a condition where a fetus fails to attain its maximum growth potential and therefore is found to have an overall lower weight and overall smaller sizecompared to other fetuses of similar gestational ages. FGR fetuses face several long and short-term complications, including respiratory disorders, cardiovascular disorders and neurological disorders. A fetus can even die as a result of FGR, which makes this defect deadly, and hence requires innovative engineering solutions. The current and most popular method used in the diagnosis and management of fetal growth restriction is ultrasound imaging coupled with mathematical modeling. Ultrasound imaging is very important as it aids specialists to view the fetus and also make measurements of certain fetal biometric parameters. These measurements can then serve as input for mathematical models in the estimation of fetal weight and visualization of the findings in forms of charts, graphs, etc., which give vital information about the likelihood of the fetus being growth restricted. However, many ultrasound machines are bulky and very expensive, making them inaccessible to people especially in low-resource settings. This work is therefore aimed at proposing a prototype of a portable ultrasound system that integrates ultrasound imaging with mathematical models for the diagnosis and management of fetal growth restriction (FGR).
