    Study of Authentic Videos as Stress-Limiting Aids in ESP and EFL lessons

    Use of authentic videos is a modern way of teaching English. Thus, their stress-limiting character in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lessons is studied in the article. The concept of stress and the causes of its appearance among university students are clarified. The meaning of ‘authentic videos’, their examples, features, and difference from adapted ones are presented as well. In addition to that, the fundamental functions of authentic video clips in English that ensure stress reduction during foreign languages studying, and the ways of limiting students’ stress using authentic videos in ESP lessons at technical universities are specified. The procedure and the results of the experimental verification of the studied issue are also provided.

    Examination of the Role Videos Play in Teaching English with Elements of Distance Education at University

    The article deals with the concept and principles of distance education, or, as it is also called, distance learning, as well as its application as an element of the English teaching course at university. The main emphasis is on teaching students, including those who are studying at the technical faculty, English as a Foreign Language and English for Specific Purposes. The clarification of the notion “authentic videos”, their examples, and the role in teaching the aforementioned types of English are provided. Clips (fragments) from movies, TV shows, and programmes have been identified as the most effective types of authentic videos in terms of teaching English, in particular at the technical faculty. That was due to the fact that such kinds of records provided the students with useful information on the speciality and made up for some missing knowledge simultaneously with the presentation of “live” English vocabulary that is actually used by native speakers, and so, in the students’ professional field abroad.

    Analysis of the Influence of Authentic English Videos on Technical Students’ Memorization and Subsequent Recall of the English Lexis

    The article deals with the influence of authentic English videos on technical students’ memorization and subsequent recall of the English lexis. The process of the brain and memory work when students are exposed to videos in class is clarified. According to the data analysed, clips from English movies and programmes are valuable educational aids in teaching English as a foreign language. This has been verified experimentally. The results of authentic videos’ influence on the students’ memorization and recall of the English lexis, as well as motivation to continue studying English are provided.

    Analysis of Authentic Videos as Study-Enhancing Aids in English for Specific Purposes Lessons at Technical Universities

    The analysis of authentic videos as study-enhancing aids in ESP lessons at technical universities is done in the article. Technical students are often taught English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Therefore, the meaning of ESP, its relation to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English for Science and Technology, and the main features of ESP teaching at technical universities are clarified in the paper. In addition to that, the importance of audiovisual aids and their authenticity in ESP lessons is clarified. Among the media, the most authentic and diverse are films, series, and programmes. Thus, the advantages of authentic English videos and the possible disadvantages of their incorrect implementation in the study process are specified. Following the analysis of the role of authentic videos in ESP lessons, the experimental verification of the studied issue with 3rd-year students-engineers and the results are provided.

    Authentic Videos in Teaching English to Engineering Students at Universities

    The article provides the study of authentic videos effectiveness in teaching English to future engineers, focusing on listening and speaking skills advancement. Being created primarily for native speakers, authentic videos (movies, TV shows, and programs) present real-life issues and communication examples. Therefore, such records may become indispensable for engineering students, who often have limited English vocabulary. The 6-week research was conducted at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” in February-March 2020. The sample was 50 full-time 3rd-year engineering students. During the research, the participants received surveys and tests. The obtained post-experimental test results revealed that the introduction of authentic videos in the English course regularly helps improve the technical students’ listening and speaking skills by almost two times. The average total mark, comprising the outcomes of listening, reading, writing, and speaking tasks, increased by 1.5 times. In the post-experimental questionnaires, the students stated that authentic videos advanced their English proficiency significantly and improved their understanding of the studied topics, including specialty-related vocabulary and issues. The vast majority of engineers-to-be expressed the desire to continue the work with videos at home. The study allows us to conclude that authentic videos are useful in English teaching since they help boost engineering students’ skills, motivation, positive characteristics (concurrently amending their weak points), knowledge in the field of specialty, and increase their interest in studying English. The research results may be employed for further studies concerning English teaching with videos at university and the subsequent lifelong learning of English.
