Higher education institutions (HEIs) face significant challenges under martial law, which disrupts traditional learning due to restrictions on movement, curfews, and communication breakdowns. In such environments, self-education becomes paramount, requiring students to take greater responsibility for their learning. HEIs must proactively implement strategies to empower students, including providing extensive digital resources like online libraries and recorded lectures, and investing in robust learning management systems for seamless content delivery and online assessments. Adapting assessment practices to fit the circumstances while maintaining academic standards is also crucial. A core focus for HEIs should be developing students' self-directed learning skills, offering training in areas like time management and goal setting. Fostering online communities and virtual study groups can provide vital peer support. Recognizing the heightened stress students may experience, institutions must provide accessible mental health support services, such as online counseling. Flexibility in pedagogy, including alternative assessment methods and personalized feedback, is essential. Addressing the digital divide is also critical to ensure equitable access to technology for all students, potentially through subsidized internet or loaner devices. Clear communication is key during periods of uncertainty. Research indicates that a supportive learning environment, grounded in self-directed learning skills, is vital. This involves workshops, personalized learning plans, and teachers guiding students to resources. The fundamental right to education underscores the need for continuous access to learning. Technology, community support, and open educational resources are indispensable for maintaining education during martial law, as demonstrated by the rapid shift to virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Providing adequate technological infrastructure and support is indispensable. HEIs must address the digital divide by offering subsidized internet access, device loans, and technical support, ensuring accessibility for all students, including those with disabilities. Beyond crises, integrating online learning promotes social inclusion and reduces educational disparities. Student mental and emotional well-being is a central concern. Institutions must provide readily accessible counseling services, support groups, and stress management resources. Teachers play a key role in fostering supportive learning environments. Collaborating with community and mental health professionals can offer comprehensive support, recognizing the profound impact of trauma on learning. Education during martial law must prioritize community, inclusivity, and mental health. In essence, supporting student self-education during martial law requires a multifaceted approach: prioritizing mental health and psychosocial support programs, digital resources, and self-directed learning skills. This integrated strategy, informed by lessons from global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, helps mitigate stress, enhance motivation, and address disparities in access to technology. By offering thorough support systems and encouraging self-directed learning, HEIs can promote student resilience and lifelong learning amidst challenging circumstances. The rapid adaptation of assessment methods during the pandemic highlights the critical need for flexibility in educational practices during emergencies.
