Документ Відкритий доступ Brand NARRATIVIZATION as receptive aesthetics: multimodal and linguistic-semiotic analysis(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2024) Voloshchuk, Iryna; Volkov, MykytaThe article aims to study the category of receptive branding aesthetics through multimodal and linguistic semiotic analysis of the narrativization of brand strategies. The article explores how linguistic (storytelling, taglines, slogans) and paralinguistic (logos, color schemes, fonts, tone, voice, etc.) means create receptive brand aesthetics as a multimodal phenomenon. Our research focuses on the multimodal and linguistic-semiotic analysis of brand communications, demonstrating how various linguistic and paralinguistic means shape the brand image and influence its perception by consumers. The article examines how multimodal narratives interact to create a receptive brand aesthetic. It also highlights the tactics through which consumers integrate these brand narratives into their own identities, emphasizing the importance of the receptive approach in the modern marketing environment. The main focus is on the study of integrated marketing communications, particularly how brands use linguistic and paralinguistic multi-semiotic systems to form both an emotional connection and an aesthetic impression on their audience.Документ Відкритий доступ Challenges of ESP classes in wartime conditions(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2022) Ameridze, Olga; Svyrydova, Larysa; Yamshynska, NataliaThe realities that Ukraine faces today, namely, the full-scale war with the imposition of martial law on the territoy of the whole country, led to a number of discussions arising around the effective but safe conducting of the education process at universities and other educational establishments and concerned the organization and proper management of the students’ learning process. Despite the previous experience of distance and blended learning modes implemented during the Covid 19 period, it should be noted that some aspects of the organization of the educational process require reconsidering, taking into account the new experience of studying in wartime and the need to regard the emotional tension of students, especially those caught up in the temporarily occupied territories. A survey was conducted among the students of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” with the aim to reveal and analyze the level of technical students’ adaptation to learning a foreign language in extreme conditions and the relevance of tools and methods the teachers have been applying on their English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes. A mixed-method research design was utilized in the study to collect, analyze, compare and contrast quantitative statistical results with qualitative findings obtained from the survey. Among the outcomes, it’s worth mentioning the non-fading motivation of students to learn foreign language, increased cross-cultural communication, and mostly high-level accommodation to distance learning mode. It was interesting to find out that students expressed unwillingness to discuss war and relevant news in the ESP lessons and are having issues with managing their academic study time. All the results obtained provide the ground for further reconsidering of the curricula to better meet the students’educational needs.Документ Відкритий доступ Comparison of automatic systems of terms’ extraction(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2019) Havrylenko, ValeriiaNowadays the processes of translation become more unified, and translators depend not only on their knowledge and sense of language, but also on various software, which facilitate the process of translation. The following article is devoted to one branch of such software, the systems of automatic extraction, which are an essential part in the process of lexicographic sources development of translation of text, which include a variety of terms. Consequently, the necessity to choose among the variety of different programs arose and the results of this research i.e. the comparison of functions of different programs, are described in our article. Several criteria, by which the quality of terms extraction can be measured, have been compared, e.g., the speed of extraction, the “purity” of the output list of terms, whether the extracted lexical material corresponded to the requirements to terms, the quality of irrelevant choices, extracted by automatic extraction systems, and the factors, influencing this quality, etc. The advantages and disadvantages of cloud and desktop services have been investigated and compared. It was noted that the main difficulty is that programs still are not able to distinguish between word forms, thus the texts that undergo the extraction process, require auxiliary procedures such as POS-marking, lemmatization and tokenization. The other obstacle was the inability of certain programs to distinguish between compound terms and simple word combinations. The key points of the research may be used in the course of translation studies, in researches devoted to “smart” or electronic lexicography and by translators in general as they may use these systems of terms extraction during the process of translation for the purpose of forming or unifying the required glossary.Документ Відкритий доступ Contribution of English lingua franca to stable cross-cultural communication(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2019) Pozhydaieva, NadiiaThe article deals with the phenomenon of English lingua franca (ELF) and its rapid expansion on the territory of Europe influencing cross-cultural communication. With globalization processes growing worldwide, cross-cultural awareness is bound to be enhancing the use of a common language for international interactions. The expanding circle of English incorporates its variety which is used for crosscultural communication exclusively by non-native speakers. There is no one who speaks English lingua franca as a native language. Thus, the analysis of its functional value should be focused on the success of communication rather than on the number of deviations from the norms. The functional range of ELF allows its users to exploit it more liberally without being bound to any specific norms or regulations. The paper illustrates the influence of the linguistic situation in Europe on the formation of a new type of the language of intercultural communication (English lingua franca) with reference to the professional culture of seafarers. It has been taken into consideration that international seafarers use ELF for their communication, both oral and written, thus contributing to the process of de-standardization of the English language. The content analysis of certain texts (extracts from seafarers’ professional correspondence) shows some independence of communicative effect from correct / incorrect grammatical and structural form of the utterance based on the use of professional sublanguage and its implicit effect. English lingua franca is promptly becoming an effective communicative instrument of mighty force. It represents a certain cultural segment and enjoys sustainable development.Документ Відкритий доступ Conversion phenomenon of the English language: its distinctive characteristics and translation into Ukrainian(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2019) Bondarenko, Tetiana; Miroshnychenko, ОlenaThis article focuses on the investigation of such linguistic phenomenon as conversion, namely its characteristic features in the system of English parts of speech and its translation into Ukrainian. Understanding the conversion forming mechanisms can significantly expand the wordstock of the English language. It is stated that there are several approaches to understanding this phenomenon, which are more likely to complement, but not contradict each other. It was determined that conversion refers to the main highly-productive types of word-formation. The article illustrates the main characteristics of conversion that distinguish this unique phenomenon among other types of word-formation and define the main reasons why it is so widespread in the English language. The research also presents analysis of this unique phenomenon in the system of English notional and functional parts of speech. In addition, the peculiarities of the translating the various semantic models of conversion from English into Ukrainian are properly investigated. For a better understanding, a great number of appropriate examples are given. At the same time, special attention is paid to the possible translation difficulties caused by striking differences in the English and Ukrainian languages. The investigation determines the ways of overcoming these difficulties. Moreover, the paper presents analysis of the conversion combinability with other types of word formation and interesting cases of converted phrases, sentences or their parts. The research encourages the idea of further investigation of conversion phenomenon. The results of this study can assist any translator in adequacy from English into Ukrainian.Документ Відкритий доступ Corpus methods as an advanced solution for technical translation quality improvement(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2018) Tkachyk, Olena V.; Koshkina, Maryna S.This article is devoted to the investigation of the main problems encountered by technical translatorswhile translating engineering texts and provision of an alternative solution for them to eliminate translation weaknesses, improve quality, and optimize translation itself. The article defines features of a good quality translation and its requirements. In addition, the ways to overcome various translation difficulties at syntactic, semantic and structural levels are given in the form of recommended translation techniqueswhich are classifiedaccording to specified criteria. The research paperalso provides a practical example of technical translation, the analysis which gives wide opportunities for studying a corpus as an alternative solution for improving thequality of the translation. The article presents types and criteria for a good corpus compilation. Practical usage of a corpus with examples is suggested to outline its main functions and opportunities which can assist any translator in achieving the closest equivalency and adequate translation. The following paper shares experience of developing the Nuclear Corpus and its successful implementationwhile using the most user-friendly corpus managers. The article also demonstrates the advantages of corpus application during translation compared to other modern technologies used in the process of translation. This research encouragesthe idea of further corpus development for the specific translation needs in order to make target texts equivalent at the highest level and meet expectations of the addressees. At the same time, the article makes it possible to study the issue of a corpus further with the purpose to identify new useful opportunities it can provide to facilitate the work of a translator.Документ Відкритий доступ Criteria development for the classification of English dialects(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2023) Колісник, Марина Павлівна; Корницька, Юлія Анатоліївна; Сокирська, Ольга СергіївнаThis article evaluates the current status of criteria development used for classifying dialects in modern English in Great Britain. Traditionally, regional criteria have been utilized, but this study explores the incorporation of urban, professional, and ethnic dialects in addition to rural regional dialects. The paper examines the classification hierarchy, which starts with geographical regions of the south and north and further expands into subzones and counties. Further utilized criteria are related to the type of locality, and it entails analysing the distinctions between dialects spoken in urban and rural areas, as well as migration and ethnicity. The study emphasizes the significance of creating more precise and comprehensive criteria for dialect classification, given the expanding scope of studying dialectal features and the association between dialect and social status.Документ Відкритий доступ Critical analysis of the discursive construction “students of COVID-19 era”(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2022) Elsa Skënderi RakipllariThe present paper aims to analyse the discursive construction students of COVID-19 (era), which has been broadly used as a label to refer to all the students, who were shifted to online education due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Following the critical discourse analysis theoretical approach, we examine the discursive planes that have built and reinforced this discursive construction. The paper focuses on three main areas that have reinforced this discourse construction: the science (s) plan, (online) media plan, and everyday life plan. The scientific discourse on education has emphasized the detrimental effects the pandemic has had, and is expected to have on learners. Moreover, traditional, online, and social media have continuously pointed to the negative impact of the pandemic on the academic performance of students. Especially social media has been using a very powerful tool to convey this kind of discursive stance, i.e., memes. The everyday life plane has also played a role in the discursive construction of students of COVID-19 era by bringing up and building upon the real-life experiences of the learning loss that students have been facing. The paper analyses representative discursive fragments from all the above-mentioned discourse planes, to shed light on the discursive construction “students of COVID-19”, as a pathologizing label used for a whole generation of learners affected by COVID-19 pandemic.Документ Відкритий доступ Electronic thesaurus on translation studies as data mining tool(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2021) Fokin, SerhiiThe article presents the results of the experiment on organizing an electronic thesaurus of translation terms, which was prepared as a part of practical classes on translated computer lexicography and terminography. The thesaurus is supplemented by terms from the field of translation studies in Ukrainian, Spanish and Portuguese. The need to organize the thesaurus is dictated by the significant disorder of translation terminology, the lack of definitions for the terms used or significant differences between the available definitions. Thesaurus allows extracting the following paradigmatic characteristics of the term: hyperonym, hyponym, meronym, holonim, cause, effect, characterization and others. Among the syntagmatic characteristics of the term in the thesaurus adjectives and verb collocations are given. The former can shed light on the qualitative characteristics of the phenomenon / object denoted by the term; the second is able to describe the actions performed by the object or the actions affected by the object. It is stated that the semantic paradigm of a term is based mainly on its connections with other terms; partially paradigmatic relations can be derived from its syntagmatic characteristics: adjective collocations of the term naturally indicate its hyponyms. Characterization of the term according to these characteristics (in particular, hyperonym, as well as other essential seven: cause, effect, meronym, holonim, etc.) can be exploited to develop a definition of the term by intentional. New knowledge can be generated on the basis of links between thesaurus articles, in particular, due to the transitivity of most thesaurus functions, chains of thesaurus links can be automatically created; inversion search allows finding not only the article in which the original term is indicated in the lemma, but also its use in the gloss and the corresponding semantic connections with other terms.Документ Відкритий доступ Euphemisms in mass media discourse: the USA elections 2024(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2024) Nazarenko, Olena; Kozel, YanaGiven the global desire of the society to promote tolerance and equality in terms of age, gender, religion, nationality, and social status, nowadays the prevalence of euphemisms has noticeably increased. Euphemisms serve as a tool to soften a harsh, offensive or unpleasant expression in order to prevent any potential conflicts, offence or discomfort when dealing with sensitive and controversial topics regarding various aspects of social life. Moreover, the use of euphemistic language instead of harsh phrases with negative emotional connotations reflects a collective effort to understand complex social patterns while maintaining mutual respect and sensitivity. It can also be seen as an essential trait of human communication that demonstrates the cultural and historical changes in society. The phenomenon of euphemism is a remarkable feature in the English-language mass media discourse. For the past decades, as the Internet and television have significantly evolved, media is widely considered to play a vital role in influencing public opinion, regarding political sphere in particular. It is set to be a crucial factor in the country's political process and all its manifestations, such as coverage of global political events, influence on election campaigns and electorate as well as the final election outcome. The use of euphemisms, in turn, is believed to be one of the key mechanisms in such influencing process created by media. Euphemisms enable media imperceptibly impact the way the public responds to political processes, events, and how it perceives certain representatives of the political world. The article outlines the issues related to the term “euphemism”, its’ definition and the role of the considered linguistic unit in modern mass media discourse. Based on articles about 2024 Unted States elections, the study analyzes the strategies of formation of euphemistic units in the English-language mass-media discourse and how it influences reader’s perception of the text.Документ Відкритий доступ Features of using lexical innovations and slang in international memes (on the example of social networks)(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2024) Nazarenko, Olena; Rebenok, ValentynaThe article explores the dynamic use of lexical innovations and slang in contemporary international memes, which are prevalent in popular social networks such as Instagram and Facebook. Memes, as a significant phenomenon of digital culture, have evolved into a unique form of communication, blending linguistic creativity with visual content to deliver messages that are often humorous, satirical, or socially reflective. This study analyzes the structural and functional features of memes, focusing on how slang and lexical innovations contribute to their effectiveness in engaging audiences and conveying complex ideas succinctly. By investigating the specific linguistic tools utilized in memes, such as newly coined terms, idiomatic expressions, and non-standard word formations, the research highlights their role in shaping online discourse. The findings also shed light on the cultural and social implications of these linguistic phenomena, emphasizing how they reflect and influence the habits, attitudes, and practices of young people, especially those learning English as a second language. Moreover, the research identifies the primary functions of lexical innovations and slang in memes, including emotional expression, humor, and the creation of shared online identities. The analysis contributes to a broader understanding of how digital communication and language intersect, providing insights into the transformative power of memes in modern Internet discourse.Документ Відкритий доступ Gender difference in language use and language attitudes in online Facebook posts of Ukrainian migrants in Germany(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2021) Kuznietsova, AnastasiiaThis article studies the gender difference of language use and language attitudes of Ukrainian communities in Germany in online social media. Since 2014, the conflict in the East of Ukraine has led to a remarkably intense flow of Ukrainian migrants to Western Europe giving rise to longstanding issues of identity formation, language use and attitudes both within Ukraine and inside Ukrainian diaspora communities. This article will examine Ukrainian diaspora in Germany on the subject of language ideologies, language use and attitudes by analyzing its linguistic online activity. To do so, our analysis will draw on a range of interdisciplinary methodologies, including studies of linguistic identity positioning, gender in migration, imagined migrant communities, and studies of discursive constructions of nationhood, which explore language indexing in relation to national identity. Social media data were collected from Facebook groups in Germany basing on follower numbers, the variety of language use, frequency of posts, and the variety of their social, cultural or political focusIt is noted that language use by members of the three studied Facebook groups in no way represents the positioning of all Ukrainian immigrants in that country. In addition, the lack of access to the migrants’ offline multimodal and dialogic language interactions posed limitations on this study. It was concluded that as opposed to men, Ukrainian migrant women may likely to develop less-Ukrainian oriented identities with less attention paid to the Ukrainian language. Therefore, while national mythologies view women as responsible for upholding Ukrainian language and traditions, women themselves, as opposed to Ukrainian men, tend to use internationally established languages as a marker for their social advancement. Thus, in the future perspective, language use and attitudes, as well as immigrants’ identity research would benefit from additional studies that examine more diverse groups of immigrants and by adding additional methods.Документ Відкритий доступ Global competence matrix(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2022) Anoshkova, TetianaThe article analyses the concept of global competence and its main components with its further integration into the curriculum based on the experience of the United States of America. The works of foreign researchers were thoroughly studied using the methods of analysis and synthesis. Based on the definition of global competence there were distinguished three basic components which are knowledge and understanding, skills, attitudes and values. A list of elements which constitute these components were presented. The basic elements which were mentioned include knowledge of one’s own history, norms and traditions; understanding of global issues and the connection between local and global social, economic and political processes; foreign language proficiency; analytical and critical thinking skills; intercultural communication and appreciation of cultural differences; and global responsibility which includes valuing human dignity and cultural diversity. Using analysis and systematic approach the matrix of global competence was constructed. Taking into account all the components of the matrix, there were identified its key elements that can be used for educating young specialists at Ukrainian higher educational institutions. Based on the matrix, such components as knowledge and understanding of historical events, intercultural awareness, analytical and critical thinking skills, appreciation of similarities and differences, and global responsibility were derived. The choice was based on the cognitive nature of the competences and their possible assessment. The results obtained can be used to improve the education curriculum in Ukraine.Документ Відкритий доступ Ideasthesia in communication of technological ideas: lingvo cognitive approach(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2024) Voloshchuk, Iryna; Glinka, Nataliia; Zarva, AnastasiiaThe article explores the cognitive concept of ideasthesia, which means sensing complex ideas or perceiving their meaning in communicating technological ideas, particularly in presentation (idea pitching). The research focuses on how sensory experiences influence the perception of complex concepts, examining the multimodal approach to idea communication in product presentations. By analyzing case studies of Bill Gates' TerraPower start-up and Apple's iPhone 16 presentation, the article demonstrates how the effective use of sensory-triggering language, multimodal visuals, and storytelling can enhance audience engagement and convey innovative concepts more persuasively. The authors emphasize the role of emotional sensations and multimodal presentations in creating impactful narratives that connect technological innovations with user experiences. The linguistics analysis embraces the usage of specialized terminology, emotive vocabulary that emphasizes the advantages of technology, imaginary words. Complex syntactic constructions that allow detailed disclosure of ideas and concepts, rhetorical questions, and motivational sentences to attract the attention of the audience, clear text structure congruent with multimodal elements appealing to universal values. The article highlights the importance of the stage from stimulating sensory pathways to concept formation in competitive startup communication, showing how companies can successfully bridge technical information with consumeroriented messaging. Through examples of visual storytelling, emotional engagement, and multimodal demos, the study illustrates how ideasthesia enhances the cognitive impact of technological ideas on target audiences. The findings contribute to understanding how startups and technological companies can utilize cognitive science to improve the persuasiveness of their communication strategies and foster stronger connections with consumers, investors, and partners.Документ Відкритий доступ Impersonalisation as a cognitive tool in simultaneous interpreting(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2024) Skrylnyk, SerhiiThis paper examines impersonalisation as a cognitive strategy that enhances the efficiency of simultaneous interpreters in English-Ukrainian language pair interpreting. Impersonalisation, which is described as being linguistic and emotionally neutral, allows the interpreters to control their cognitive load, remain clear-headed, and even emotionally neutral during moments of extreme emotion. In spite of its significance, there has been scant literature on the use of impersonalisation in interpreting studies, leaving a gap in practical aspects of training as well as a theoretical one. The controlled experiment enrolled 30 master students who were put into experimental and control research groups. The experimental group was trained on a structured program on impersonalisation techniques, such as use of passive voice, agent-less sentences, and filtering of emotions in out of politics speeches for 12 weeks. Participants were able to pursue their education in a simulated environment where ethnic conflict scenarios sparked emotions. The performance was evaluated by means of language assessment, NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX), and eye movement pattern data collection as enriched with questionnaires and interviews. Findings showed that impersonalisation resulted in more successful interpreting performance. The experimental group increased the level of neutrality by 30% and had 25% less load on their cognition compared to the control group. Emotion filtering was the most efficient method of reducing cognitive effort while proficiency in non-linguistic interventions raised the level of quality. This research qualifies impersonalisation as a pivotal device in the context of simultaneous interpreting and further for interpreter education and practice. Further studies may seek to investigate its use for other languages and more difficult interpreting situations, including its combination with various technologies used in interpreting.Документ Відкритий доступ Intercultural communication competence in specialized languages and contexts: research prospects and possibilities(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2019) Miguel Ángel Candel-MoraRecent advances in communication technologies, globalization, internet 2.0, mobile communication and social networks, among many other factors, have led to a growth of possibilities of communication between people of different languages and cultures never seen before in the history of the world. However, recent language research highlights the fact that knowledge of the language alone does not guarantee successful communication in international contexts: cultural diversity, intercultural communication competence, cultural intelligence, intercultural sensitivity and intercultural awareness place an emphasis on the intercultural dimension of foreign language education. It is stated that foreign language training in professional settings needs to be customized according to the academic context, social demands and professional profiles of individuals. Existing intercultural communication competence assessment instruments seem to focus on generic needs of learners, based on a generic learning context, and measure the individual’s ability to communicate in a foreign language across cultural boundaries, but at the same time, seem to pay attention to the variable of a specialized context biased by cultural constrains. It seems that universal intercultural communication competence assessment models are failing to meet actual requirements and training efforts are not aligned with teaching objectives. Upon identifying the basic dimensions of intercultural communication such as knowledge, attitude and behaviour, this study proposes a revision of different specialized communication settings and intercultural communication competence instruments from the perspective of professional communication and then review existing research lines to, finally, propose research opportunities from the point of view of specialized languages and contexts. Leadership language in the course of war: framing and reframing aspects(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2023) Voloshchuk, Iryna; Glinka, Nataliia; Usyk, GalynaThe article presents a multimodal study of leadership language on the example of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s speeches. The significance of the article is determined by the need to investigate the strategy of the modern political narrative of the leader by creating frames and its implementation in both the national and foreign mass media landscapes. The work analyzes how media coverage of Zelensky’s orations constructs frames of the Russian-Ukrainian war viewing. How media (using a mechanism that allows creating a new psychological frame to expand their perception) reframes the outlooks by imposing a specific interpretation onto events. As a result of both textual and visual analysis of Zelensky’s video messages, it is evident that to achieve the communicative goal, the President uses a complex system of argumentation schemes (from the sign “argument from the sign”, by analogy “argument by analogy”, cause and-effect relationship). Numerous strategic and tactical communicative techniques and tools (metaphors, metonymies, epithets, comparisons, allusions, means of stylistic syntax) aimed at creating a frame of Ukraine and shaping its identity allow his speeches to sound clear and convincing.Документ Відкритий доступ Linguistic and extralinguistic characteristics of TED talks as multimodal English text(КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського, 2020) Marchenko, Valentyna; Minenko, YevheniiThe article focuses on the investigation of such linguistic phenomenon as multimodality, namely its linguistic and extralinguistic features in TED Talks. TED Talks is a conference where influential people speak to the audience about important issues that need to be addressed in our society. Speakers of the conference perform a role of ideators who are trying to get their ideas across to the people in the audience. To fulfill their objectives, they resort to different techniques implementing all kind of linguistic and extralinguistic means in their strategies of drawing public attention. To realizing a full potential of a performance on stage, speaker needs to be fully prepared, which means making a presentation, a speech and thinking about their actions on stage in advance. Duration of a TED Talk usually varies from 10 to 15 minutes, which is motivated by people’s generally short attention span. The article is based on D. M. Kaysina’s classification of rhetorical strategies that are realized in TED Talks. This classification helps us understand the basics of linguistic means which play a large part in forming a communicative intention. As well as how different parts of the sentence can be combined to create the synergy needed. Understanding the principles play a key role in oral presentation and helps us better understand how language works.
